Embankment collapses in Kalapara : Thousands of families trapped by floodwaters
Goffran Palash, Kalapara (Patuakhali)
Moderate to heavy rainfall continues due to the influence of a low-pressure system. Water has breached damaged embankments, flooding at least 10 villages in Kalapara.
The newly- constructed seawall road adjacent to Kuakata beach has collapsed under the onslaught of sea waves even before its inauguration. Two successive high tides have raised river and canal water levels by 2 to 3 feet, submerging thousands of homes outside the embankments. Continuous rainfall has caused waterlogging in various areas, trapping thousands of families. Numerous fish enclosures and ponds have been washed away.
Strong winds continue to blow across the coastal areas, prompting the weather office to maintain a No. 3 cautionary signal at Payra and all other sea ports in the country
Kalapara Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mokchedul Alam stated that the exact extent of the damage is still unclear, but preliminary estimates indicate 6,480 families are waterlogged, with 460 homes partially damaged. Dry food and rice have been allocated for the affected people across six unions.
UNO Md. Robiul Islam said, over a thousand packets of dry food and rice are being distributed to the waterlogged and partially damaged households. These will be distributed tomorrow, Saturday. Further measures will be taken once the full extent of the damage is assessed and allocations are determined accordingly.
