Coast Guard detains 13, seizes illegal trawler, nets, fish in Banshkhali

The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained 13 fishermen and seized an illegal artisanal trawler, along with huge quantities of current nets and marine fish, during an operation in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, Media Officer of the Coast Guard Headquarters said this on Thursday noon.

Acting on a tip-off, a special team from the Coast Guard Banshkhali Contingent conducted the drive at around 12:00 AM on Thursday in the estuary adjacent to Shekherkhil Fish Ghat under Banshkhali Police Station. During the operation, the team intercepted and seized an illegal artisanal trawling boat.

A subsequent search of the vessel yielded seven pieces of destructive trawling nets, valued at approximately BDT 8.5 lakh, and 2,100 kilograms of diverse marine fish. Thirteen fishermen aboard the vessel were detained on the spot for their involvement in illegal fishing practices.

The process of taking legal action regarding the seized artisanal trawler, nets, fish, and the detained individuals has been taken.
