On the occasion of the first death anniversary of Professor Humayun Kabir Hiru—one of the organizers of the Liberation War, former Member of Parliament for Barguna-1 (Barguna Sadar–Betagi), former General Secretary of the Central Committee of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD), and a heroic freedom fighter,  Betagi Foundation of Barguna organized a memorial discussion and Doa Mahfil at Betagi on  Friday (May 16). 

The event was presided over by heroic  freedom fighter Md. Ziaul Kabir Dulu, Chairman of the Betagi Foundation and former Organizing Secretary of the JASAD Central Committee, as well as the Chairman of the Palestine Returnee Freedom Fighters’ Council, Bangladesh.

The chief guest at the event was freedom fighter Sardar Abdur Rashid Advocate, who served as the wartime commander of Patuakhali district, former MP, and former Chairman of the Patuakhali District Council.

Social worker Dr. Sultan Ahmed, Delowar Hossain Dilip (General Secretary of JASAD, Patuakhali), former JASAD leader of Barguna district Mezbab Ahmed Mukul, President of the Barguna District Nationalist Freedom Fighters Party valiant freedom fighter Md. Yusuf Ali Mridha, wartime commander of Betagi police station Abdul Motaleb Sikder, Principal Altaf Hossain (President of Betagi Upazila Nationalist Freedom Fighters Party), former JASAD leader Abdus Sobahan Member, Principal Maulana Abdul Motaleb of Salehia Senior Madrasa, former Principal of Betagi Women’s College Rafiqul Amin, former Panel Mayor Hadisur Rahman Panna, Headmaster Jahangir Alam Lavlu, journalist Saidul Islam Montu, valiant freedom fighter Abdul Khalek Mina, the late leader's eldest daughter Daisy Kabir, son Ahsan Ul Kabir Lenin, and BNP leader Arafat Rahman Noyon were present. 

The program was conducted by the foundation’s General Secretary, banker and Joint General Secretary of the Sonali Bank Central Zia Parishad, Md. Selim Mia. Recitation from the Holy Qur’an was performed by the foundation’s former publicity secretary, Hafiz Md. Alauddin. The prayer (doa) session was led by Hafiz Maulana Atikur Rahman, Khatib of the Model Mosque.

Speakers highlighted the late Professor Hiru's illustrious political, familial, and social contributions, and praised his integrity. In honor of his contributions to the Liberation War, they urged the government to name the road from Betagi Bazar's riverbank to Sabuj Kanon School as "Bir Muktijoddha Professor Humayun Kabir Hiru Road."

The speakers also demanded justice for the disappearance of the foundation’s former office secretary, banker Md. Nazrul Islam, calling for punishment of the fascist regime's police officers involved in the incident. They appealed to the interim government to find Nazrul Islam and return him to his family.
