Bumper corn production in Lalmohan due to favourable weather

Jahid Dulal, Lalmohan (Bhola)

There has been a bumper corn yield in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola. Now, when you look at the vast fields, it seems like this is an empire of corn. Seeing the good yield in the land, the farmers are also smiling.

This year, the weather is favorable and compared to last year, corn cultivation has increased in this upazila. Every year, new farmers are leaning towards corn cultivation. The cost of corn cultivation is low, but the yield and price are high, so there is more interest in corn cultivation among farmers. Currently, farmers in this upazila are waiting to collect corn from the land.

According to the information of the Lalmohan Upazila Agriculture Office, this year corn has been cultivated on 700 hectares of land in this upazila. Last year, the amount was about 550 hectares. Farmers of Paschim Charumed Union of the upazila have cultivated the most maize this year. The cultivated land of the farmers includes Kohinoor, Hybrid Dawn-111, Lucky-7, Hybrid Uttron and several other improved varieties of maize. Farmers can collect the maize yield from their land within 145 days of planting the seeds. Farmers of Lalmohan Upazila will complete the collection of maize from their fields within the next 20 to 25 days. Farmers will be able to sell the maize wholesale at Tk 900 to Tk 1,100 per maund in the market.

Md. Kamal Hossain, a farmer from Majhagram area of Ward No. 5 of Paschim Charumed Union of the upazila, said, this year, we have cultivated maize under the demonstration of the Agriculture Office on 33 percent of our land. For this, the Agriculture Office has provided free fertilizers and seeds. Currently, the land is yielding as expected. We will be able to collect maize from the land within the next 20 days. This time, the cost of this corn cultivation has been about 15 thousand taka. I hope that after collecting the harvest, I will be able to sell at least 35 thousand taka worth of corn.
Corn farmer Md. Manju of Collegepara area of ward number 7 of the same union said, I have been cultivating corn for the past few years. This year, I have cultivated corn on 300 percent of the land.

Although there is some problem with water, the field is currently producing good yields. So far, the weather is also fine. I will be able to collect corn from all the lands within the next month. This time, the cost of land lease, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and labor costs for this corn cultivation has been about 1 lakh taka. However, I hope that after collecting all the harvest from the land, I will be able to sell corn worth at least 2.5 lakh taka, InshaAllah.

In this regard, Lalmohan Upazila Agriculture Officer and Agriculturist Md. Abu Hasnain said that the Department of Agricultural Extension has provided various agricultural inputs including fertilizers and seeds to the corn farmers free of cost. As the weather is favorable for farmers, there is a possibility of good maize yield for the farmers of this upazila this year.

Our officials are also regularly visiting the field level and providing necessary advice to these maize farmers. Therefore, we hope that this year the maize farmers will reap the expected benefits by harvesting the crop.
