Two brothers from Jibannagar dreaming of growing grapes
Asim Sayeed, Jibannagar (Chuadanga)
Two brothers from Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga, Lal Mia and Tariqul Islam, have made a name for themselves by growing foreign fruits like dragon, malta and lemon. These two agricultural entrepreneurs are dreaming of growing grapes.
First, they planted some trees as an experiment. Those trees bore fruit. Since the taste is sweet, the two brothers started a commercial grape garden on three and a half bighas of land a year ago. The trees have yielded incredible yields.
On the spot, it can be seen that grapes are hanging in bunches in between green leaves on a trellis made of twine and bamboo. However, they are not yet ripe. And after 20-25 days, these green grapes will turn red and black. They will be juicy and sweet to eat.
To get sufficient yield of this foreign fruit, the garden needs to be maintained regularly. That is why there are separate workers. There are guards to guard the garden. They receive regular advice from the Upazila Agriculture Office.
The dream of these two brothers, agricultural entrepreneurs, is that if we can produce grapes in the soil of Jibannagar, then imports from abroad will decrease. At the same time, our people here will also benefit.
Entrepreneur Tariqul Islam said, we have always been cultivating new fruits. For this, we have planted a three and a half bigha of grapes. Since this is the first time that our garden has yielded such a harvest, we hope to get more harvests in the future.
Lal Mia said, there are about 750 trees in the three and a half bigha garden. We hope to be able to harvest an average of 15 kg of grapes from each tree. So far
we have spent about 1.4 million taka. We hope to be able to sell grapes worth about 3 million taka.
Those involved say that by cultivating grapes in the soil of Jibannagar in this way, Lal Mia and Tariqul are creating the possibility of not only changing their own fate, but also changing the agricultural picture of the entire area. People from far and wide are coming every day to see the grape garden and take pictures. More new agricultural entrepreneurs will be created from here.
Upazila Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Amanur Rahman said that the door of possibilities has opened in grape cultivation in Jibannagar. Tariqul and Lal Mia are constantly given all kinds of advice from the Agriculture Office. They are provided with all kinds of cooperation from the Agriculture Office.
