Gazipur City Correspondent
Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has officially reopened its long-awaited ‘School of Law’. Prof Dr. Nahid Ferdousi of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages has been appointed Dean of the newly reestablished school . She formally assumed her responsibilities on Tuesday morning.
It may be recalled that former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. Ershadul Bari founded the School of Law on 11 October 2005. Later, during the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Professor R. I. M. Aminur Rashid, the Board of Governors decided to suspend the activities of the school through an official order on 3 September 2009. At that time, the LLB program and its faculty members were transferred to the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, while all movable and immovable assets and manpower were placed under the administration division. Since then, the LLB (Honours) and LLM programs have been functioning under the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam undertook special initiatives to modernize legal education and to further strengthen and streamline the ongoing LLB (Honours) and LLM programs. Considering the growing interest of students and increasing demand for admission, the Board of Governors has approved and reactivated the School of Law as a separate academic entity.
The reopening of the school marks a new milestone in the expansion and enhancement of legal education in the country.
