Bangladesh is actively formulating a modern, safe, and responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance framework, anchored in human rights, ethics, and inclusive development under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Faqir Mahbub Anam, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, conveyed this on Saturday while representing the country at the "High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance," held during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 in Shanghai, China.
Addressing the forum, the Minister stated that the current government is meticulously reforming the nation’s digital policies and legal structures. He noted that the primary objective of this transformation is to leverage the potential of AI for the welfare of citizens, while simultaneously establishing robust governance mechanisms to mitigate potential risks associated with the technology.
Under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh is progressing rapidly in formulating an integrated and inclusive National AI Policy. Key government initiatives in this domain include the strengthening of personal data protection and cyber security measures, drafting guidelines for AI deployment in the public sector, and ensuring responsible data management standards. Furthermore, the government is focusing on expanding AI-based education and curriculum while establishing decentralized AI Centres of Excellence across the country.
Proposing a roadmap for global AI governance, the Minister highlighted four fundamental priorities: safety, equity, adaptability, and international cooperation. He stressed that the international community must prioritize close collaboration to ensure technology transfer, capacity building, data sovereignty, and equitable technological access, particularly for developing nations.
Faqir Mahbub Anam further underscored Bangladesh's call for strengthened global cooperation, asserting that the future of artificial intelligence should not solely reflect technological prowess but must firmly embody human values, justice, and inclusivity.
The high-level meeting, organized under the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future," served as a platform for intensive dialogue on leveraging AI to accelerate sustainable development, strengthen collective security, and ensure inclusive growth.
The summit convened heads of government, ministers, and representatives from over 100 countries, alongside international organizations, industry leaders, and distinguished academics.
The 'World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026' is a four-day global summit taking place in Shanghai from July 17 to July 20, 2026.
