An awareness meeting on the "Mother Hilsa Protection Campaign-2026" was held in Naltona Union under Barguna Sadar Upazila on Saturday to safeguard mother hilsa during peak breeding season and boost overall fish production.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General and Education) Animesh Biswas attended the program as chief guest, with Barguna District Fisheries Officer Zia Uddin presiding over the session.

Addressing local fishermen, officials reminded them that a 22-day nationwide ban on catching, transporting, selling, stocking, and exchanging hilsa is in effect from October 8 to October 29, 2026, to ensure uninterrupted spawning.

Speakers warned that violating the prohibition would invite strict legal action, noting that offenders face up to two years of imprisonment, a fine of up to Tk 5 lakh, or both under existing fisheries conservation laws.

Union Parishad Chairman and former District BNP Organizational Secretary Shafiquzzaman Mahfuz attended as special guest, alongside the Barguna Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer, who delivered the welcome address. Speakers urged fishermen, fish traders, and local stakeholders to strictly comply with government directives to protect national fisheries resources.
