Awareness rally, discussion held on World Mental Health Day in Fulchhari

Mental distress is not always visible. Behind a smiling face, a person may be silently struggling with deep emotional pain. Emphasizing the importance of listening to people’s unspoken concerns, supporting those experiencing mental health challenges, and eliminating social stigma and misconceptions about mental health, World Mental Health Day 2026 was observed in Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha.
On the occasion, an awareness rally and discussion meeting were organized by Fulchhari Upazila Health Complex, with the support of Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) and the Stormy Foundation.
The theme of this year’s observance was “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”
The programme highlighted the importance of mental health, empathetic treatment of people experiencing mental health difficulties, listening carefully to their experiences, and seeking professional support when necessary.
Speakers at the discussion emphasized that good health means more than simply being free from physical illness. Mental well-being and peace of mind are equally essential components of overall health.
The programme also discussed ways to manage psychological stress, provide Psychosocial Support Services (PSS), promote empathetic behaviour, and create mental health-friendly environments in families, educational institutions, and communities.
Speakers at the discussion included Dr. Md. Manjurul Islam of Fulchhari Upazila Health Complex; Medical Officer Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun; Md. Akkas Ali Akand, Education Officer (PO) of GUK; and Md. Al-Faruk Sarkar, Fulchhari Upazila Coordinator.
The message of the day was clear: Listen to people’s experiences, never dismiss their suffering, and build a mental health-friendly society through empathy, awareness, and collective action.
