An attack on the Ulka-4 bus, designated for Jagannath University (JnU) students, has left at least seven people, including the bus driver, Jagadish, injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday near the Mohakhali Bus Terminal, allegedly carried out by drivers and helpers of Akota Paribahan.
Eyewitnesses reported that when the university bus reached the U-turn area in Mohakhali, an Akota bus was parked, blocking the road for an extended period. Despite honking several times, the bus did not move to give way. This led to a verbal altercation between the drivers of the two buses.
Describing the incident, Mizanur Rahman Sohag, a student from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, said, "Our bus driver asked the Akota driver to move since their bus was unnecessarily blocking the road. Instead, the Akota driver attacked our driver with a stick. When they tried to drag him away, we intervened, and they began assaulting us as well. Female students on the bus were also targeted with bricks and stones."
Ulka-4 bus driver Jagadish recounted, "The Akota bus was blocking the road with no vehicles in front of it. Despite repeated requests to give way, their driver and helper attacked us with sticks. Others from Akota joined in, breaking my hand, injuring my body, and even hitting my eye. I demand justice for this."
Professor Dr. Md. Omar Faruq, JnU Transport Administrator, said, "Our driver Jagadish is critically injured, and we are uncertain about the condition of his eye. Several of our students were also hurt. Such attacks on university buses, whether from JnU or elsewhere, are unacceptable."
