The 38th anniversary of the Dhaka University Chess Club was celebrated on Wednesday.

On this occasion, a 3-day chess tournament titled ‘Winter Chess Festival’ began today. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan was present as the chief guest at the Games Room of the Student-Teacher Center and cut the club’s anniversary cake and inaugurated the chess tournament.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Dhaka University Chess Club President Tanvir Alam and was attended by University Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Club Moderator and University Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, Grandmaster Enamul Hossain Rajib, International Master and National Chess Coach Abu Sufian Shakil and Late Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman's wife Labanya Rahman spoke as special guests. Club General Secretary Imran Sharif conducted the auspicious program. The cover of the magazine 'Kistimat' published on the occasion of the founding anniversary was unveiled at the program.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan congratulated the members of the club on the founding anniversary and said, chess is not just a game, it is one of the means of intellectual practice. It has an impact on our personality and mental world. Many renowned universities of the world have included chess as part of their educational programs.

The Vice-Chancellor called on the students to continue practicing chess and other sports to build a rational and intellectual society and develop talent. It is worth noting that 2 competitions are being held in the 3-day 'Winter Chess Festival'. The 'Dhaka University Chess Championship' will be held today and tomorrow with the participation of Dhaka University students. The 'Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman Memorial Open Rapid Chess Tournament' will be held on January 3. This tournament will be open to all.
