As part of the nationwide program to plant 250 million trees in five years, 1,500 fruit, forest and medicinal tree saplings have been distributed in Jhalakathi. The Jhalakathi District Council took this initiative with the aim of conserving the environment, combating the adverse effects of climate change and instilling a love of trees among students.

The saplings were handed over to representatives of 35 educational institutions in the district at a ceremony held at the Zilla Parishad premises on Tuesday (August 4) afternoon. Each institution was given 40 saplings of different species.

Advocate Md. Shahadat Hossain, Administrator of Jhalokati District Council and Member Secretary of District BNP, inaugurated the program as the chief guest.

Present at the event were District Council Chief Executive Officer Imran Shaharia, Jhalokati Municipal BNP General Secretary Md. Anisur Rahman Tapu, Jhalokati District Chhatra Dal Convener Syed Ali Hasan, Municipal BNP Joint Convener Abdur Razzak Rony, and people from different classes and professions and teachers and representatives of educational institutions.

Advocate Md. Shahadat Hossain said, "Trees not only maintain the balance of the environment, they also ensure the safety of human life and future generations. If every person plants at least one tree and takes care of it, it will be possible to build a green, beautiful and livable Bangladesh."

He urged students and teachers to properly plant and care for the saplings distributed, saying, "A tree today will become a source of oxygen, shade, and food for tomorrow. Therefore, tree planting must be taken as a social responsibility."
