1,32,034 ultra poor families get VGF rice ahead of Eid-ul-Azha in Lalmonirhat
Md. Lavlu Sheikh, Lalmonirhat
Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, 1,32,034 ultra-poor, destitute, and helpless families in Lalmonirhat have been provided with rice under the VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) program.
According to the Lalmonirhat District Relief Office, each selected family is receiving 10 kg of rice, and the distribution process will be completed by June 3. This year, VGF rice is being distributed across five upazilas and two municipalities in the district. A total of 1,320.340 metric tons of rice has been allocated for the five upazilas, and 92.420 metric tons for the two municipalities. The distribution process has already begun.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner H.M. Rokib Hayder stated that, in honor of the holy Eid-ul-Azha, this rice is being distributed to the district’s ultra-poor, poor, and helpless families.
However, allegations have surfaced that some leaders of a certain political party have collected 100 VGF rice seal slips from each ward in every union of the district through local UP members. Residents of Gokunda Union in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that a specific local leader collected 100 slips from each of the nine wards via the respective UP members. Although the UP members refused to speak on the record, they did express their frustration over the matter.
It is alleged that the rice obtained using these slips has already been collected, repackaged from government sacks through a syndicate, and sold illegally. Notably, in recent weeks, families affected by storms were also provided 30 kg of rice each.
