
3 fishermen fined for attempting to catch Hilsa in violation of ban in Kalapara

A mobile court has fined three fishermen, Sohrab Hossain (60), Jamal Khan (55) and Jasim Pyada (30), for attempting to catch Hilsa in violation of the ban in the Andharmanik River of Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.
On Sunday afternoon, Kausar Hamid, Executive Magistrate of the mobile court and Kalapara UNO fined them Tk 2,000 and Tk 6,000 respectively under the Fisheries Protection Act, 1950.
Earlier, they were arrested during a drive to save mother Hilsa from the Andarmanik River adjacent to Baliatoli area around 1 am on Saturday. During this, the fisheries department recovered 1,000 meters of net from them. The arrested fishermen are from different villages of Nilganj Union of the upazila. Kalapara Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Apu Saha and Payra Port Naval Police SI Kamruzzaman were present during the drive.
Kalapara Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said, "Our campaign will continue to make the 22-day blockade a success to protect the mother Hilsa. During this time, stricter legal action will be taken against anyone who hunts fish in the rivers and seas."
