'Kidnapped' Mannan was in Tablig Jamaat : SP Disappearance drama ends at successful police investigation in Chunarughat
Chunarughat (Habiganj) Correspondent
A family resorted to a staged "disappearance" drama to frame their rivals due to a prior land dispute at Alonia in Chunarughat
It is learnt that Shahina, daughter of Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, filed an abduction case at Chunarughat Police Station, alleging her father’s kidnapping. To amplify the drama, they even held a press conference, delivering emotional statements with tearful voices, describing the supposed "abduction" to journalists.
However, police investigations, aided by information technology, revealed the truth
Abdul Mannan was in hiding, and no abduction had occurred. The police determined the entire incident was preplanned. Their demeanor, expressions, and acting were so convincing that without scrutiny, not only ordinary people but even experienced individuals could have been misled. Through dramatic statements at the press conference, they created a stir across the area.
It is reported that to frame their rivals, the Jitu gang, Abdul Mannan Chowdhury went into hiding and orchestrated the drama, while his daughter Shahina filed an abduction case against 10 individuals. The complaint alleged that on the night of June 13, Mannan was forcibly taken from his home by the rival group and had been "missing" since. To make the claim appear credible, Shahina held a press conference at Chunarughat Press Club on June 24, demanding her father’s recovery alive. However, the police found the case suspicious from the start and launched an investigation. It was revealed that Mannan was not abducted; he had been in hiding since June 17, participating in a 40-day Tablighi Jamaat program at the Master Bari Jame Mosque in Rajapur village, Boktabali Union, Fatullah Upazila, Narayanganj.
Under the supervision of Habiganj Police Superintendent A.N.M. Sajidur Rahman, a police team led by Chunarughat Police Station OC Nur Alam conducted a thorough investigation. With the assistance of information technology and cooperation from Fatullah Police Station, Abdul Mannan was recovered from Fatullah on June 27, 14 days after the alleged abduction, by Chunarughat Police Station’s Mridul Kumar Bhowmik. The true story then came to light.
OC Nur Alam said , “We investigated the alleged abduction with utmost professionalism and responsibility. The investigation revealed that Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, claimed to be abducted, was voluntarily in hiding. No concrete evidence of abduction was found. With the help of information technology, we located and recovered him. We are certain this was a staged drama. The complainant’s statements do not align with the reality of the incident, and legal action will now be taken.”
The incident has caused a stir in the area, with locals calling it an unprecedented example of deception. They emphasize that those responsible should face legal consequences. Jitu Miah Chowdhury, from the affected rival group, stated, “Six months ago, my elder brother Mafil Miah was murdered, and Mannan Chowdhury was behind it. To escape accountability, his daughter staged this abduction drama, and we are being harassed with a completely false case. We seek justice through the court.”
Former Union Parishad member Farid Miah commented, “Such staged dramas not only trouble rivals but also hinder investigations into genuine crimes or abductions. Those responsible should face exemplary punishment.”
Locals alleged that such false cases are filed to harass rivals over land disputes, obstructing justice for genuine victims. The incident has sparked widespread discussion and criticism in the area. Many describe it as a misuse of the law and an injustice to victims. The conscious section of the community has expressed relief that the administration uncovered the truth promptly. However, Shahina insists her father was abducted by the Jitu gang, but when questioned about the Tablighi Jamaat, she could not provide a clear response.

It is unfortunate that attempts were made to create confusion with a false case. Further action will be taken based on the investigation.
