N'ganj traders demand measures to stop extortion, robbery

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj

Due to a sharp rise in extortion, robbery, and terrorism in the Nayamati area of Narayanganj city, local traders are facing severe losses. If the situation continues, it will become nearly impossible to continue business operations. Traders have called on the authorities to take immediate and strict action to arrest the criminals. They also hinted at launching a whistle-and-stick protest movement if necessary.

In protest of the rising crimes, hosiery, knit, printing, and yarn traders of Nayamati held a protest meeting on Sunday afternoon. They stated that the situation is gradually getting out of control, making it extremely difficult to run businesses.

According to the traders, daily demands for extortion, nighttime robberies, and threats at their shops have become routine in Nayamati, while the administration remains indifferent. This protest meeting is a response to the worsening situation.

The owner of a local printing factory said, “We work during the day, live in fear at night. The workers can’t go out after dark. Almost daily, someone’s bag is snatched or phone stolen.”

At the meeting, Md. Badiuzzaman Badu, President of the Bangladesh Hosiery Association, said, “We’re not politicians—we’re businesspeople. But now it seems we have to take to the streets just to continue our businesses.”

Also present at the meeting were Kabir Khan, President of the Deobhog Garment Manufacturers Association, and Abdus Sabur Khan Sentu, Vice President of the Hosiery Association. Speakers said that despite repeatedly drawing the administration’s attention, no effective steps have been taken.

One association member said, “We won’t stay silent any longer. If visible action isn’t taken within seven days, we will take to the streets with whistle-and-stick processions.”

Traders said that a well-organized gang has been running a reign of terror in Nayamati for a long time. If extortion is not paid, they vandalize vehicles and attack shops. Anyone who resists receives threats.

The protest speakers urged the administration: “Take action now if you want to save businesses. Otherwise, a movement will begin.” Residents now ask: how much longer will Nayamati’s traders live in insecurity if these criminals aren’t caught?
