Heavy rain triggers waterlogging : Municipal residents in distress in Faridpur

Mahbub Pial, Faridpur

Continuous heavy rainfall over the last four days ending on Monday has triggered severe waterlogging across several low-lying areas in Faridpur, submerging vital roads and agricultural lands. The prolonged inundation has significantly disrupted vehicular and pedestrian movement, leaving daily wage earners and farmers the hardest hit.

Local canals and drainage channels have swelled past their capacities due to the incessant downpour, causing floodwater to overflow into adjacent residential pockets. A physical inspection today at noon around the Safir Bridge area under Ward 25 of Faridpur Municipality revealed a grim situation.

At the homestead of local resident Yunus Mridha, floodwater had completely submerged the courtyard and surrounded the main living structures. The plinth of his house, built traditional-style with compacted mud, collapsed after being saturated by the standing rainwater. Furthermore, the family’s adjacent small grocery shop, their primary source of livelihood, is on the verge of being flooded.

Scores of households across Ward 25 are facing a similar predicament due to the rising water levels, forcing many residents to seek immediate external assistance.

Stranded residents of the ward have made an urgent appeal to the municipal authorities and the local administration to deploy emergency drainage equipment to clear the waterlogged zones and to immediately dispatch humanitarian relief to the affected families.
