6 months in jail without theft: Allegations of framing domestic worker to save daughter in Bogura’s Shajahanpur
Md. Sanwar Hossain, Shajahanpur (Bogura)
Allegations have surfaced against former army personnel Ahsan Ali Mia and his wife, Hafiza Khatun—a teacher at the primary section of Bogura Cantonment Public School and College—for framing a mentally challenged domestic worker in a theft case. They allegedly did this to shield their own daughter from theft accusations, resulting in the worker spending nearly six months in jail.
The domestic worker, Mariyam Khatun, was recently released on bail. Upon her release, she told journalists that she was in no way involved in the theft. She alleges that she was deliberately implicated in the case even after the stolen gold ornaments were recovered from the room of Tanu, the couple's university-going daughter.
According to Mariyam and her family, she was initially taken to Shajahanpur Police Station following the theft of gold ornaments on March 24, 2025. However, she was released upon signing a personal bond as no preliminary evidence linked her to the theft at that time.
Her family claims that news of the couple's daughter, Tanu, being involved with the stolen jewelry subsequently spread through the area. To cover up the matter, Ahsan Ali filed a case at Shajahanpur Police Station on March 27. Domestic worker Mariyam was later formally arrested in connection with that case.
Mariyam alleges that she was taken into police remand multiple times after the case was filed. During this period, she accused the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Kuddus, of subjecting her to physical and mental torture.
Mariyam further claims that at one point during the remand, the police took her to Ahsan Ali's residence at night. There, Ahsan Ali beat her with a waist belt and pressured her to confess to the theft. She also alleges that she was pressured to implicate a neighbor named Mishti in the case.
According to her, she was compelled to give a confessional statement in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure due to the pressure and torture inflicted by the police and the plaintiff's side. She also mentioned that she had subsequently applied to the court to retract that statement.
After her release on bail, Mariyam said, "I am not involved in the theft in any way. The stolen items were found in Tonu's room. I was also pressured to implicate someone else in the case. I have applied to retract the statement I gave in court, which was made out of fear of torture."
Meanwhile, Mariyam's family has alleged that Tonu—the daughter of the couple, Ahsan Ali and his wife—is a drug addict. However, it could not be confirmed whether any independent evidence exists to substantiate this allegation.
When asked about the status of the investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sayeed of Shahjahanpur Police Station stated, "The investigation into the case is ongoing."
When the plaintiff, Hasan Ali, was asked about the matter, he said the investigating officer had instructed him not to speak about it.
