Rohingyas want to return to Myanmar: UN chief

Staff Correspondent

Rohingyas expressed their desire to return to their homes in Myanmar during a visit by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to the Ukhiya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar on Friday, the UN chief said.

This was one of their two clear messages for the UN, Guterres said after his visit, urging the international community to work towards restoring peace in Myanmar and ensuring equal rights for the Rohingyas in their motherland.

Their second message was the dire need for better living conditions in refugee camps. Unfortunately, the US and many other donor countries have abruptly cut down humanitarian aid, prompting UN agencies to reduce food rations.

Guterres pledged to put his highest efforts in persuading countries to provide the necessary funds and avoid any deterioration of the current situation in camps.

He will strongly raise his voice at the international stage for the plight of the Rohingyas, as they desperately need foreign assistance to live with dignity.
