Barishal Sadar UNO honoured by locals for resolving long-standing road dispute
Masud Rana, Barishal Bureau
The long-standing ordeal over a road in Ganpara village, Kashipur Union, Barisal Sadar Upazila, has finally been resolved. Despite numerous lawsuits, clashes, and mediation attempts, the issue persisted until a unique initiative by Barisal Sadar UNO Md. Iqbal Hasan brought a permanent solution.
On Sunday afternoon, UNO Md. Iqbal Hasan inaugurated the disputed road, which was paved at government expense, earning him heartfelt gratitude from the local community, expressed through floral tributes and mementos.
The resolution process began last Wednesday through the efforts of Assistant Commissioner (Land), Airport Thana Police, student representatives, and local public representatives, leading to the settlement of the dispute. The locals expressed their satisfaction with the outcome.
It is learnt that the family of Mahidul Islam Mamun, an expatriate in Italy, has been residing in Ganpara for nearly two decades. However, neighboring families raised objections to the road used for accessing their home, resulting in multiple ongoing lawsuits. Eventually, under the initiative of the Barisal Sadar UNO, the road was planned to be paved under the Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Project of the Disaster Management Department with government funding. The project was named “Ganpara Maikul Islam Mamun’s House Front Road Paving Project.”

However, its implementation faced obstacles. On Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Azharul Islam visited the site and, after prolonged discussions with both parties, successfully mediated an agreement. Both sides agreed to withdraw lawsuits and resolve the conflict, committing to use the road harmoniously. Student representatives Labanya, Shifa, Gazi, and others were present during the mediation.
Eyewitnesses noted that the skillful efforts of Assistant Commissioner (Land) Azharul Islam made this resolution possible, as previous attempts by others had failed. They described the agreement as a message of peace for the area.
Barishal Sadar Assistant Commissioner (Land) Azharul Islam said, under the guidance of the UNO, the issue was resolved through extensive discussions involving the Project Implementation Officer (PIO), thana police, and local representatives. He expressed gratitude to all involved parties for their contributions.
