Administration's role questioned over illegal Hilsa catching in Madaripur
Mir Imran, Madaripur
Hilsa fishing is continuing in various places in Shibchar, Madaripur, in violation of government bans in the Padma River. From dawn to night, fishermen are seen casting nets and selling fish at various ghats. However, there is no visible activity from the fisheries officials and administration.
Although fishing in the river is completely banned according to government guidelines to protect mother hilsa and ensure future reproduction, in reality hilsa are being caught in violation of that law. Due to the silence and lack of surveillance by the upazila fisheries officer and administration, a large number of hilsa are being caught every day, which are being sold openly in various markets on the banks of the Padma in Shibchar.
Locally aware people say that if the administrator and upazila fisheries officer do not take effective measures now, there will be a major loss in hilsa production in the future, and consumers will lose the taste of hilsa in the future.
Lax campaigns are not helping, rather the government is spending crores of taka on various programs in the name of campaigns in fisheries and administration.
