Two-day Int’l Confce begins at DU : Need for conducting pragmatic research to further development of socio-economic conditions

A two-day long 1st Development Studies International Conference on ‘Navigating Development Pathways in the Evolving Global Order’ begun on Sunday in a city hotel.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal presided over the inaugural session while Speaker of National Parliament of Bangladesh Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP addressed it as chief guest.

The Department of Development Studies of DU has organized this event.

State Minister for Ministry of Finance Ms. Waseqa Ayesha Khan addressed the program as special guest. Former Advisor of Caretaker Government Prof. Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, Rector of International Institute of Social Studies of Netherlands Dr. R.R. Ganzevoort, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Bath, UK Dr. Joe Devine and Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Khan of the University of London, UK addressed the program as distinguished panelists.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury stressed the need for conducting pragmatic researches to further develop overall socio-economic condition of the country and ensure the brightened future for our new generation.

She urged all professionals and academicians to work together for making Bangladesh as ‘Sonar Bangla’ which was dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Terming Bangladesh as one of the fastest growing economic county in the world, she said Bangladesh has made tremendous progress in various fields including poverty reduction, women empowerment, gender equality and food security under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She called upon all to come forward for making Bangladesh a developed and prosperous country.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal stressed the need for strengthening collaboration among industry and academia to make inclusive society as well as ensure sustainable development. He urged the international community to work unitedly to face various global challenges including climate change, environmental pollution, economic instability as well as social and regional conflict.

This conference will create a common platform for academicians and researchers around the world to conduct further research in this regard, he hoped.
