Pvt varsities giving naval certificates to students without proper training

Staff Reporter

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday said a number of private universities are providing certificates of naval sectors for students without giving proper education and training which are making the sector risky.

“If these students somehow enter the government sector, what will happen to us. Ship owners who invest millions in it will be victim of it. The government is working to improve the situation,” he said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of Naval Safety Week-2022 on a ship on the Buriganga River.

He said Bangabandhu prepared scientific education policy, but it was scrapped after 1975. As a result Bangladesh is still lagging behind in the sector, he added. He also said his ministry is working to ensure navigability by dredging the river.

“The succeeding government after 1975 did not work for the improvement of waterway transportation. As a result it had been a neglected sector,” he said.

Khalid said, “The government has set up the third river port in Payra. We’ll use the port to release goods in February. We are also working to enhance the capacity of Chattogram port.”
