Joint opera exhibition at DU to celebrate Chinese New Year

A joint opera exhibition was held at Dhaka University Theatre on Wednesday to celebrate Chinese New Year 2025.

Students of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Dhaka University and artists from the ‘Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Center’ in China participated in this theatre exhibition. This theatre exhibition was organized as part of a cultural exchange program between various institutions in Bangladesh and China. Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan was present as the chief guest at the event.

The event was presided over by Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, Chairperson of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Dhaka University, and was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) of the university, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, and Third Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, Mr. Zhuyong, spoke as special guests. Departmental teachers, students and officials of the Chinese Embassy were present at the time.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan extended his greetings to everyone on the occasion of Chinese New Year and said that Bangladesh and China have enjoyed friendly relations for a long time. Both countries are working together in various fields including education, research and trade. He expressed hope that the existing friendly relations between the two countries will be further strengthened in the future through knowledge, experience and cultural exchange programs.

It is worth noting that a theater troupe of China's 'Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Center' is performing opera plays in various places in the country including Dhaka to participate in the 'Spring Festival' on the occasion of Chinese New Year 2025.

The troupe came to Dhaka University today as part of the cultural exchange program. At the event, artists from the Zhejiang Wu Opera Research Center showcased their thousand-year-old cultural heritage through various aesthetic performances including opera music, acrobatics, group dance, and snake dance. Students from the Department of Theater and Performance Studies, Dhaka University, showcased various aspects of indigenous theater through theatrical performances.
