Amtali (Barguna) Correspondent
Chhatra Dal leaders and activists seriously injured Amtali Government College third-year degree student Imran Fakir (23) and his associate Zahidul Islam (25) with iron rods over depositing money in a bank.
The incident took place on Wednesday night. The injured were rescued by locals and admitted to Amtoli Upazila Health Complex. Later, they were sent to Barisal Shebachim Hospital for advanced treatment.
It is learned that on Wednesday afternoon, Imran Fakir stood in line at Agrani Bank to deposit money to fill out forms. At that time, college branch Chhatra Dal senior vice-president Sajal Mridha and co-office secretary Farhad violated the line rules and deposited the money first. When Imran protested, the Chhatra Dal leaders got angry and beat him up while he was filling out forms in the college. At that time, another third-year student, Omar Faruk, stepped forward to protect him, but he was also beaten up.
Later in the evening, Imran Fakir was called to the house of Upazila Chhatra Dal member secretary Imran Khan with the promise of resolving the matter. But before they reached the house, 20-25 Chhatra Dal workers surrounded them and beat Imran Fakir and Zahidul Islam with iron rods, seriously injuring them.
The injured Imran Fakir said, “I and my colleague were beaten up in a planned manner for protesting irregularities in the bank line. I want those involved in this incident punished.”
However, denying the allegations, Sajal Mridha, senior vice-president of the college branch of Chhatra Dal, said, “Rather, Chhatra League leader Imran Fakir attacked us. Our publicity secretary Rabbani was injured in this and is undergoing treatment at Shebachim Hospital.”
Upazila Chhatra Dal member secretary Imran Khan said, “I only called for a settlement. I don’t know who or what beat them up.”
Barguna District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nurul Islam Roni said a committee will be formed to investigate the matter.
Amtali Upazila Health Complex Resident Medical Officer Dr. Rashed Mahmud Roknuzzaman said the injured have been sent to Barisal for better treatment.
Amtali Police Station OC Dewan Jaglul Hasan said, “I have heard about the beating but have not received any complaint. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.”
