Hundreds of workers rendered jobless due to heavy rains in Kalapara
Gofran Palash, Kalapara (Patuakhali)
Hundreds of workers in various unions of Kalapara upazila have been rendered jobless due to four consecutive days of continuous heavy rains. Aman fields, canals and beels have been submerged in water.
Most of these working people earn their living by working in the fields and farms, as well as driving rickshaws and vans. These workers basically have to support their families with their daily earnings. Just as people are not leaving their homes unless necessary during the heavy rains, workers are also unemployed due to lack of work.
Md. Salam Namel, a rickshaw puller, said, "The money I earned from driving a rickshaw on Wednesday and Thursday was not even enough to pay the owner's rent. I am sitting at home unemployed on Friday and Saturday."
Another rickshaw puller, Md. Moklesur Rahman, said, "This is the first time in my life that I have seen such rain. I have not even earned 400 taka in this four-day rain. However, a family of four members has to spend at least 400 taka every day."
Van driver Solaiman said, "I deliver whatever I find in an open van. I have been unemployed for four days due to the continuous rains."
Meanwhile, the sun was not visible due to four consecutive days of rain and cloudy skies.
