One completely burnt in just 30 seconds : 130 people die in gas accidents in N’ganj in four years
Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
Over the past four years, Narayanganj has witnessed 157 gas-related accidents, resulting in the deaths of at least 130 people.
The city's aging gas pipelines, managed by Titas Gas Company, have been a major factor in these tragic incidents, with leaks remaining largely unaddressed for decades. Despite repeated explosions and fires, no significant steps have been taken to modernize the infrastructure.
In many cases, gas leaks in enclosed spaces lead to deadly explosions when ignited by an electrical switch or a stove. Fire officials emphasize the importance of awareness, urging both residents and authorities to take preventive measures. Titas officials, however, argue that many accidents stem from customers' negligence or unauthorized modifications to gas lines.
The situation is particularly alarming given that Narayanganj has over 66,000 residential gas customers and nearly 600 industrial connections. While Titas acknowledges the outdated infrastructure, their response remains largely reactive rather than proactive. Investigations into past incidents, such as the deadly 2020 mosque explosion, have highlighted Titas' responsibility, yet regular inspections remain inadequate.
Community leaders and safety advocates blame both Titas and consumer negligence for the recurring disasters. Illegal gas connections, facilitated by corrupt officials and influential locals, further complicate the issue. Residents are urged to report leaks promptly and avoid unauthorized modifications, while authorities must take urgent action to prevent further loss of life.
Despite multiple fatal incidents in recent years, including factory fires and residential explosions, meaningful improvements to gas safety in Narayanganj remain elusive.
