
Int'l symposium at DU emphasizes sustainable use of science, tech to tackle emerging challenges

A day-long international symposium titled ‘Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Harnessing Science and Technology to Tackle Emerging Challenges’ was held at the Mukarram Hossain Khandaker Vigyan Bhaban Auditorium, Dhaka University on Sunday.
The symposium was jointly organized by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association. Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha was present as the chief guest at the event.
The event was chaired by Prof Dr. M Abdul Karim, Vice President of Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association, and was attended by Takahashi Naoki, Minister of the Embassy of Japan in Dhaka, and Professor Dr. Prof. Dr. Otani Yoshio spoke as the special guest. The welcome address was delivered by the General Secretary of Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association, Prof. Dr. ATM Zafrul Azam. The convener of the symposium organizing committee, Prof. Dr. Yarul Kabir, proposed the vote of thanks. The member-secretary of the organizing committee, Prof. Dr. Md. Ilyas-al-Mamun, delivered the welcome address.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof. Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha said, with the increase in the use of science and technology, we are facing various challenges. To address these challenges, everyone will have to work together at the national and international levels. Sustainable use of science and technology must be ensured to address the emerging challenges. She expressed her hope that the Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association will play an effective role in further strengthening the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Japan.
Teachers and researchers from various universities in Bangladesh and Japan presented papers in 5 technical sessions of the day-long symposium. After the technical session, the annual general meeting of the Bangladesh JSPS Alumni Association was held.
