AC explosion at start of summer : Incident in N’ganj sparks caution
Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
Even before summer has fully arrived, an AC compressor explosion in Narayanganj has resulted in the deaths of two technicians. Experts see this as a warning sign. Though the mornings still carry traces of winter, the rising heat brings new risks. This incident serves as a wake-up call for AC users to ensure their units are properly inspected by experienced technicians before the hot season begins. Otherwise, disaster could strike unexpectedly. What is meant to be a device for comfort can turn into a deadly hazard.
Experts emphasize the importance of carefully selecting an AC when purchasing. Narayanganj Fire Service officials and several technicians pointed out that, in an attempt to save money, people often opt for non-branded, low-quality ACs. Many of these are assembled from salvaged parts rather than professionally manufactured. Fire service officials warn that investing in a well-known brand, even if it costs more, is a safer choice.
After the 2020 mosque explosion in Narayanganj’s Talla area, discussions on social media highlighted concerns about AC safety and gas pipeline security. Initially, it was suspected that an AC explosion had caused the mosque disaster, but later investigations revealed that leaked gas from an underground pipeline had accumulated inside the mosque, leading to the explosion.
Incidents of gas leaks, AC explosions, cylinder blasts, and electrical malfunctions causing fires and explosions are common, especially in residential areas. Reports indicate a rise in casualties from AC and refrigerator explosions, particularly in Narayanganj and other regions. Experts attribute this to counterfeit and substandard appliances, faulty installations, and a lack of lightning protection on buildings. They stress the need for proper installation, routine maintenance, and timely servicing.
Additionally, specialists recommend government oversight of appliance retailers, mandatory product certification and rating systems, and enforcing expiry date regulations for refrigerators and ACs.
Mohammad Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service & Civil Defense, stated, “There should be clear regulations on the use of chemicals in electronic products, along with mandatory government certification. Over the past decade, the use of ACs and refrigerators in Bangladesh has increased significantly. If compressors get jammed or gas leaks occur due to lack of maintenance, explosions can happen.”
He further explained that poor maintenance and high electrical voltage are key contributors to AC explosions. He advised installing high-quality circuit breakers and proper earthing systems in buildings to prevent electrical hazards.
In early 2019, the National Board of Revenue’s Customs Intelligence Department seized 1,100 counterfeit air conditioners worth 10 crore BDT from Chattogram. These units were falsely labeled with well-known brand names. Many AC parts are imported illegally, bypassing customs duties, and are then assembled into substandard products, which are more prone to explosions.
Extended use of ACs can strain a building’s electrical capacity, increasing the risk of accidents. Similarly, keeping lights, fans, computers, or televisions running for long periods without turning off their power sources can lead to short circuits.
According to Fire Service data, electrical fires often result from short circuits, improper wiring, use of subpar materials, poor building design, and lack of maintenance. Officials warn that using cheap, low-quality electrical accessories, such as multi-plugs or sockets, can be hazardous. Plugging heavy appliances like refrigerators and washing machines into multi-plugs can overload the circuit, leading to short circuits and fires.
