Shamim Ara, a family welfare assistant at the Morelganj Upazila Family Planning Office in Bagerhat, has been temporarily suspended following multiple allegations of irregularities and corruption.

Due to proven charges of absenteeism, negligence of duty, misconduct, and violations of administrative discipline, she was suspended on February 18 through an official order signed by Md. Shamsuddin Molla, Deputy Director of the Bagerhat District Family Planning Office.

The investigation revealed that Shamim Ara had not been regularly attending her workplace for a long time and was mostly staying in Dhaka. Allegations against her include negligence in duty and misconduct with service seekers, disrupting the normal activities of the office.

A probe led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Nazmul Islam found that 87 employees had filed complaints about her irregularities. It was particularly noted that whenever she was instructed to follow proper work procedures, she reacted negatively with various excuses. Local residents also accused her of reluctance in providing services, resulting in many being deprived of necessary healthcare.

In response, Shamim Ara denied all allegations against her. However, the investigation report confirmed the validity of the complaints. Additionally, it was revealed that her husband had threatened office officials with dire consequences, which was proven in a cybercrime investigation.

Administrative sources stated that recommendations have been made for departmental and legal actions against Shamim Ara. Her temporary suspension was issued under the Government Employee Discipline and Appeal Rules, 2018. During her suspension period, she will receive half of her salary as subsistence allowance along with festival allowances.

Meanwhile, local residents have urged the administration to ensure strict monitoring and effective measures to guarantee proper public services.
