In protest of the brutal killing of Asaduzzaman Tuhin, a journalist for the Daily Protidiner Kagoj, who was hacked and slaughtered in broad daylight at Chandna Chowrasta in Gazipur, a human chain and protest rally were held in Savar o Saturday noon.
Local and national media journalists participated in the program in front of the Savar Press Club.
Savar Press Club President and Savar Correspondent for Daily Bangladesh Pratidin and News24 Television, Nazmul Huda, said, those involved in the murder of journalist Tuhin must be arrested within 72 hours and given exemplary punishment. Otherwise, the Savar Press Club will launch a strong movement.
“This is not just the death of one person—it is an attack on press freedom.” Speakers alleged that journalist Tuhin was deliberately murdered for filming footage of criminals while performing his professional duties. On the same day, another journalist in Gazipur was assaulted in public. They stated—“This killing is not just the loss of a journalist’s life; it is a direct assault on free journalism and media independence. Such a brutal murder in broad daylight, in public view, will remain a disgraceful chapter in the country’s history.”
Speakers at the event demanded the immediate arrest of the killers and a speedy trial under the law. They also urged the government to take effective measures to ensure the safety of all journalists in the country.
The human chain was addressed by Savar Press Club’s Organizing Secretary Omar Faruk, Office and Publicity Secretary Imdadul Haque, Executive Member Aklakur Rahman, Ekushey TV’s Shahed Jewel, Global TV’s Tofayel Hossain Tofasani, ATN Bangla’s Sheikh Abul Bashar, Asian TV’s Ahsan Ullah, along with numerous journalists from local print and electronic media.
Speakers unanimously warned—“If exemplary punishment for the killers is not ensured, a larger nationwide movement involving every journalist in the country will be announced.”
