Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj

A gas leak led to a devastating explosion in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj Sadar Upazila, leaving eight people severely burned.

The victims have been identified as local residents: Sabbir (16), Hannan (40), Sohag (23), 1.5-year-old Sumaiya, Rupali Begum (20), Samiya Akter (9), Jannat (3), and Nurjahan Laki Begum (30).

All injured individuals were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for treatment. The explosion occurred late Sunday night in the No. 2 Dhakeshwari area of Siddhirganj.

According to Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical Police Outpost, all eight victims are currently receiving medical care, and no deaths have been reported yet.

Confirming the incident, Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Director of the Narayanganj Fire Service, stated that the explosion occurred in a tin-roofed house where two families were sleeping in separate rooms. It is suspected that a gas leak from an underground pipeline led to the accumulation of gas, which eventually triggered the explosion, severely injuring all eight people.

Hospital sources at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery reported that the condition of all eight victims is critical. The extent of burns varies, with Hannan suffering 45% burns, Sumaiya 44%, Sohag 40%, Rupali Begum 34%, Sabbir 27%, Nurjahan Laki 22%, Samiya 7%, and Jannat 3%.
