Kalurghat Bridge opens for traffic today

The Chittagong Kalurghat bridge was closed for more than a year for the renovation work. This bridge is being opened for traffic today ( Sunday) morning.

Confirming the matter, Railway Eastern Bridge Engineer Jisan Dutta said that the Kalurghat Bridge was built on the Karnaphuli River in 1930. The 90-year-old Kalurghat bridge has been renovated and made ready for traffic. The restoration work of the bridge has been done under the supervision of BUET's expert team.
However, there is no formal inauguration planned. The bridge will be opened for vehicular traffic on October 27. General Manager, Engineer and other senior officials of Railway East will be present.

Chief Engineer of Railways Jafar Mia said that renovation work of Kalurghat Bridge has been completed with the advice of BUET engineers at a cost of around Tk 43 crore. Due to the vehicular movement over the bridge, water accumulated inside the railway track and the railway track was damaged.

Due to this reason, the bridge was closed for traffic during different times of the year due to the need of railway track repair. Now, the water drainage path has been made by pouring special technology concrete on the existing pavement. Now both the road and the railway will be stronger than before, said the railway engineers.

According to the sources of railway engineering department, Kalurghat Bridge in Chittagong for the operation of trains in the country's largest tourist city, Cox's Bazar, under the supervision of the expert team of Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET), the renovation work of the bridge started on August 1 last year.

The bridge has been closed for traffic for the past 14 months since the renovation work began.

The train service started on the route from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar on November 5 last year. It has been announced several times to open the bridge for traffic, but it has not been possible to open the bridge for traffic as the renovation work has not been completed.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge on foot along with vehicles and trains.
