In Dohar, Dhaka, deed writers and general people formed a human chain demanding the cancellation of the additional source tax imposed on land registration.

On Monday afternoon, members of the Deed Writers Association participated in the human chain in front of the Upazila Sub-Registry Office. At that time, general people also expressed solidarity with them.

Senior Vice-President of the Deed Writers Association, Badsha Molla, said that in Dohar Upazila, the current additional source tax imposed is 30,000 taka per decimal of land or 50,000 taka per katha. As a result, the number of deeds being executed is decreasing day by day, causing the government to lose revenue. At the same time, deed writers are unable to register deeds as before.
At present, due to the increase in source tax in Dohar, the rate of land buying and selling has dropped to the bottom. As a result, deed writers are living in extreme hardship as their income has stopped. They demanded the cancellation of the additional source tax to normalize the registration process.

President of Dohar Press Club and English teacher of Padma College, Md. Tarek Rajib, said that buyers and sellers are also in trouble because of the current source tax pressure. They are angry at such a decision by the government.

Regarding this, BNP leader from Sutarpara area, Abdul Jalil, said, if the registration fee is so high when buying land, then what’s the point of buying it? It’s better to carry on as it is. He considered it “adding insult to injury.”

Upazila Sub-Registrar Aklima Yasmin admitted that the number of deeds executed has decreased due to the additional source tax.

Deed writers of Dohar Upazila and general people of the upazila were present at the human chain.
