The unveiling ceremony of the weekly newspaper ‘Gournadi Parikrama’ was held at the Gournadi Upazila Auditorium in Barishal on Friday.

M. Zahir Uddin Swapan, Member of Parliament for Barishal-1 (Gournadi-Agailjhara) Constituency and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister, attended the programme as the chief guest.

Among others present were Gournadi UNO.Md. Ibrahim, Land Officer Md. Mehedi Hasan, District BNP Member Secretary Mizanur Rahman Khan Mukul, Upazila BNP Convener Sarowar Alam Biplob, Upazila BNP General Secretary Zahir Sazzad Hannan Sharif, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Business Department Finance Secretary Alhaj Hafiz Mufti Md. Saiful Islam, and Municipal Amir Maulana Md. Hafizur Rahman.

Teachers, eminent citizens, journalists, professionals, community leaders and representatives of different political parties were also present at the event.

Speaking at the programme, the guests emphasized the importance of responsible and objective journalism in highlighting the social, cultural, economic and public-interest issues of the local community.

They said that local newspapers can play an important role in bringing people's concerns, expectations and development-related issues to the attention of the appropriate authorities. They also stressed the importance of accuracy, neutrality, professionalism and ethical standards in news reporting.

The speakers expressed hope that ‘Gournadi Parikrama’ would regularly highlight the history, heritage, achievements, challenges and development prospects of Gournadi while giving due importance to the voices and interests of local people.

The programme concluded with the formal unveiling of the weekly ‘Gournadi Parikrama’ newspaper.
