Verdict in BNP leader Faruk murder after 13 -yr : Three sentenced to death, 4 get life in Tangail

A court has sentenced three accused to death and four to life imprisonment in the murder case of Rafiqul Islam Faruk, former chairman of Dainya Union Parishad in Tangail and former vice-president of Tangail Sadar Thana BNP. One person has been acquitted in the case.
Judge Md. Faisal Al Mamun of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court of Tangail gave the verdict on Monday morning. The Tangail Court Inspector confirmed the information in the afternoon.
The convicts sentenced to death are Saniat Khan Bappa (30), the then vice-president of the central Chhatra League, Md. Azad (25), son of Afzal Fakir of Kagmara area of Tangail Sadar Police Station, and Shahjahan Mia (31), son of Shahid Mia of Srifoliata village of Dainya Union. All of them are absconding.
Besides, the accused sentenced to life imprisonment are Md. Sujan (32), son of Abdul Latif Mia of Kathoa Jogni village under Tangail Sadar Police Station, Sanwar Hossain (34), son of Rawshan Ali of Srifoliata village, Shafiqul Islam Shafiq (25), son of Nurul Islam of Uttar Kaiyamara Riverside (Char Para) village, and Ruzbel alias Emon, son of Nur Box of Chitki Bari village.
Among them, Shafiq and Ruzbel are absconding. The court acquitted one accused named Sanjit Ghosh (26) in the verdict.
According to the case source, Rafiqul Islam Faruk lived in a rented house in the Akurtakur area of Tangail city. On December 20, 2013, at around 6:30 am, he went out for a morning walk. When he reached the Battala Bazar area of Akurtakur, a group of terrorists shot and hacked him to death. Later, the police recovered his body from the scene. The next day, Faruk's younger brother Lavlu Mia filed a murder case with the Tangail Sadar Police Station.
Tangail Judge Court Additional Public Prosecutor Saidul Rahman Swapan said that after the trial, three people were sentenced to death and each was fined Tk 100,000. In addition, the four people sentenced to life imprisonment were each sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment in default of paying a fine of Tk 50,000.
