In a major push toward rural self-reliance, the nation's largest volunteer network joins forces with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to turn grassroots discipline into agricultural enterprise.

Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP), the country's largest community-based volunteer organization, is spearheading a quiet revolution in rural Bangladesh. Through its flagship initiative, the Sanjiban Project, the force is taking decisive steps to shift its members away from job dependence and toward sustainable self-employment.

The initiative reached a key milestone on Thursday (September 10) following a high-level courtesy meeting between Sultan Salauddin Tuku, MP, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, and Major General Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud, Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP. The discussion centered on integrating the newly structured "Sanjiban Platoons" directly into the nation’s fisheries and livestock supply chains.

From grassroots discipline to agri-business :
Since early 2026, Ansar-VDP has been mobilizing "Sanjiban Platoons" at the sub-district and village levels. The core objective is simple yet transformative: harness the discipline, organization, and local presence of its grassroots volunteers to build community-led agribusinesses.

Under technical guidance from the Department of Livestock Services and Department of Fisheries, Sanjiban entrepreneurs are set to establish low-capital, high-yield ventures, including nanaged rearing of high-breed cows, goats, and sheep ; commercial production using indigenous and cross-bred poultry maximizing underutilized village ponds, fallow lands, and water bodies for modern fish farming and direct member involvement in adulteration-free feed usage, hygienic farm practices, and streamlined direct-to-market supply networks.

Institutional synergies: Training, loans, and market links :
To make these micro-enterprises resilient and scalable, the project introduces an end-to-end support model. Rather than operating in isolation, Sanjiban Platoons will receive specialized technical training from ministry agencies, backed by accessible micro-entrepreneurship loans through the Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank.

This combination of training, initial capital, production inputs, and market integration ensures that individual volunteers can operate as structured Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Empowering millions, securing protein :
With a vast network of nearly 6 million Ansar-VDP members, the project holds the potential to uplift around 30 million individuals connected to their households.

By turning grassroots volunteer strength into an engine for livestock and fish production, the Sanjiban Project addresses three critical national goals at once - boosting domestic production of safe meat, milk, and fish ; creating sustainable livelihoods right at the village level and establishing a replicated, disciplined model for rural economic growth.

By combining institutional discipline with targeted technical and financial assistance, the Sanjiban Project promises to serve as a sustainable blueprint for socio-economic development across rural Bangladesh.
