Supporting political party not criminal offense : International pressure mounts for release of four Bangladeshi journalists

Staff Correspondent

International concern has intensified over the prolonged pre-trial detention and multiple criminal cases filed against four senior Bangladeshi journalists. A joint statement issued by five prominent global watchdogs—Amnesty International, CIVICUS, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Human Rights Watch (HRW), and Article 19—has brought these concerns back to the global center stage.

The rights organizations have urged the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to drop investigations against journalists Farjana Rupa and Mozammel Haque Babu, refrain from bringing charges related to their professional journalism, and immediately release the four detained journalists: Farjana Rupa, Mozammel Babu, Shakil Ahmed, and Shyamal Dutta.

The global watchdogs argue that investigating journalists under crimes against humanity charges for their coverage of the 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Dhaka's Shapla Chattrat is entirely inconsistent with international human rights standards. They warn that labeling editorial choices or news reports as crimes against humanity threatens to cripple press freedom across the nation.

A major point of contention is that all four journalists have been held in pre-trial detention for nearly 18 months without formal chargesheets, which directly violates the fair trial principles of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Consequently, these groups express deep concern that the legal actions appear linked to the journalists' political inclinations and perceptions of their professional alignment, rather than any credible evidence of individual criminal acts.

This advocacy has built up steadily over the past two years. In 2025, a broad coalition of rights groups—including Amnesty International, HRW, PEN America, and CPJ—issued an appeal urging the government to end the weaponization of criminal laws against media professionals. By April 2026, the CPJ directly petitioned the Law Minister for their release, pointing out the lack of credible indictments despite months of detention.

The situation escalated further in May 2026 when Amnesty International strongly condemned the formal arrests of Farjana Rupa and Mozammel Babu under the International Crimes Tribunal, calling it a dangerous precedent for press freedom. Recently, the Commonwealth Journalists Association joined the chorus, labeling the accusations as politically motivated and urging the administration to immediately review the cases.

A central theme of the ongoing global debate is that while critics accuse the four journalists of being vocal supporters of the ousted Awami League regime, international human rights frameworks protect political opinion.

Smriti Singh, South Asia Regional Director at Amnesty International, said that freedom of expression protects opinions and information that others may find uncomfortable, controversial, or even offensive, and she stressed that journalists must not be prosecuted based on their perceived political affiliations.

Legal experts and UN special rapporteurs have consistently emphasized that a state's primary duty is to create a safe environment for media personnel rather than pursuing retaliatory litigation. While journalists are not above the law and can be prosecuted for specific, evidence-backed criminal actions like direct complicity in violence or corruption, such allegations must remain completely distinct from their editorial decisions or ideological stances.

In their joint statement, the five international organizations reminded Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of his electoral pledges to uphold democratic values. They remarked that dropping politically motivated cases against journalists and ensuring that no media worker faces prosecution for their professional output would be a major step toward fulfilling the administration's declared democratic commitments.
