Showrooms occupy sidewalks in Sylhet, administration warns of eviction drive
Sylhet Bureau
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has taken a strict stance on removing illegally built vehicle showrooms occupying sidewalks and roads in the Sylhet metropolitan area. The administration has announced that an eviction drive against these illegal showrooms will begin from October 16.
The SMP said on Thursday in a government notice that a deadline has been set until October 15. Within this period, the concerned parties have been requested to remove illegally placed vehicle showrooms and vehicles from roads, sidewalks or government lands..
The SMP notification further said, "If any illegal vehicles or showrooms occupy sidewalks or road space after the specified time, legal action will be taken against them and eviction activities will be conducted."
The SMP said that the illegal showrooms are obstructing public movement, increasing traffic congestion and destroying the beauty of the city. This initiative has been taken to alleviate public suffering and restore order.
Sources said that the traffic department of the SMP, police members of the concerned police station and the mobile court of the City Corporation will participate in the operation. All kinds of measures will be taken in the operation, including fines, seizure of goods and eviction of establishments.
The initiative has been welcomed by local pedestrians and city residents. According to them, "Vehicles occupying roads and sidewalks are a major cause of traffic congestion and chaos across the city. Such operations by law enforcement agencies should be regular."
