Mongla Coast Guard West Zone has started a special operation to protect mother Hilsa during the breeding season on the coast of the world's largest mangrove forest area in the southwestern region, known as the world heritage fish reserve Sundarbans.
They are conducting operations and patrols against poachers in the rivers and sea coast adjacent to the Sundarbans from 11 am today, Thursday (Oct9) to implement the restrictions announced by the government.
At the same time, they have also conducted miking, distributed leaflets and held discussion meetings to increase awareness among fishermen. Coast Guard members also called on everyone to follow government laws to protect mother Hilsa for the growth of fish.
At a press conference at Trimohana of the Pashur River adjacent to Mongla Sundarbans on Thursday afternoon, Coast Guard West Zone Staff Officer (Operations) Lt. Commander informed this.
The Coast Guard said that since its establishment, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been making an important contribution to the security of the vast sea, coastal and riverine areas adjacent to the Sundarbans. In addition, to protect Bangladesh's fisheries resources, strict surveillance and continuous operations by the Coast Guard are continuing to prevent the killing of Jatka, preserve mother Hilsa, and ban on fishing in rivers and seas. Therefore, the Coast Guard has taken all measures to successfully implement the mother Hilsa conservation program to increase the fish population. To enforce the restrictions, intelligence surveillance is being increased in the rivers and seas of the Sundarbans and patrol activities are being conducted 24 hours a day. In addition, miking, leaflet distribution and discussion meetings are being organized to increase awareness among fishermen and all fishermen who catch Hilsa are urged to comply with government laws.
He also said that the Coast Guard is continuing to take strict action against lawbreakers by conducting coordinated operations with other organizations active in the conservation of Hilsa, including the Bagerhat District Administration, Fisheries Department, Navy, Police and Forest Department.
Expecting the help of fishermen in protecting the mother hilsa, Lt. Commander Abrar Hasan, Operations Officer of the Coast Guard West Zone, said, "We believe that today's conservation is tomorrow's abundance. Our call and request to the fishermen brothers is, let's all help the Coast Guard to protect the mother hilsa and keep the Sunil economy dynamic. Only then will we be able to gift a treasure trove of fish resources to our future generations. Therefore, to help you and me survive, the Bangladesh Coast Guard will continue round-the-clock patrol activities to protect the mother hilsa in the coastal river areas of the Sundarbans under its responsibility," he said.
It is mentioned that recently, fishing by trawlers and fishing boats in the rivers and canals adjacent to the Bay of Bengal, Sundarbans, Pashur Channel and Sundarbans has destroyed marine biodiversity, disrupted fish reproduction, destroyed plants and fish in the Sundarbans, and disrupted the balance of the ecosystem, which is creating a threat of a fish shortage in the Bay of Bengal in the future. As continuous operations are underway against illegal current nets, fishing with poison, trawlers, trolling and fishing boats, their use has mostly decreased. If the Coast Guard's operations continue, the reproduction and offspring of fish in the sea and rivers adjacent to the Sundarbans will increase, the official said.
