Shamim Ara victim of conspiracy at Morelganj Family Planning Office, questions over investigation
Morelganj (Bagerhat) Correspondent
Allegations of irregularities and conspiracy have surfaced at the Morelganj Upazila Family Planning Office in Bagerhat.
In the latest incident, Family Planning Assistant Shamim Ara has reportedly been subjected to a deliberate scheme, allegedly involving Medical Officer and Acting Family Planning Officer Dr. Md. Hasan Tarek.
According to reliable sources, Dr. Hasan Tarek has been accused of abusing his power, mistreating colleagues, and influencing the investigation process. Reports suggest that the office has turned into a place of fear, where dissenting opinions lead to punishment.
On January 8, 2025, Shamim Ara was admitted to a local clinic due to illness. However, it is alleged that Dr. Hasan Tarek forcibly summoned her from the clinic, verbally abused her with insulting language, and intimidated her, causing further deterioration of her physical and mental health.
In a written complaint, Shamim Ara stated, “I was unwell, yet I was forcibly called in and humiliated. I was even threatened regarding my job.” Despite her complaint, the investigation committee allegedly failed to conduct an impartial inquiry. Sources claim that the investigation was completed in her absence, raising further doubts about its credibility.
Reliable sources also claim that Dr. Hasan Tarek and his close associates pressured officials to reject Shamim Ara’s medical documents and forced her to return to work, exacerbating her health condition.
Shamim Ara’s husband, Mizanur Rahman, stated, “Despite my wife being sick, she was summoned to the office and humiliated. This worsened her condition, and she has now been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment.”
He further added, “We have filed complaints with the Anti-Corruption Commission and relevant authorities. We urge the administration to conduct a fair investigation and ensure justice.”
In an alleged attempt to cover up the conspiracy and divert attention, efforts were made to mobilize field workers into protests. On Sunday, February 16, supporters of the accused officer gathered at the Bagerhat District Family Planning Office. As a result, 15 union health and family welfare centers remained closed, depriving patients of essential services and causing significant public dissatisfaction.
When asked about the allegations, Dr. Hasan Tarek denied them, stating, “Shamim Ara is not regularly present at the office and neglects her duties. She was asked to comply with regulations, which led her to conspire against me.”
Meanwhile, District Family Planning Office Deputy Director Md. Shamsuddin Molla confirmed awareness of Shamim Ara’s complaint and stated, “The matter is under investigation. A fair inquiry will reveal the truth.”
Local residents express concerns that the absence of a permanent Upazila Family Planning Officer for an extended period has led to administrative disorder. Many fear that if such irregularities persist, healthcare services will suffer, ultimately harming patients.
Now, the question remains: Will the administration take strict action against corruption, or will this web of conspiracy deepen further?
