School girl dies by jumping into river in Sunamganj

A school girl died reportedly by jumping off a bridge into the River Surma in Sunamganj on Thursday morning.

The deceased is Jesmin Akter Tazim, 16, a Class X student of Government Satish Chandra Girl High School and an examinee of the upcoming Secondary School Certificate examination.

She is daughter of Rohanur Rahman Rohan in Sholashahar area in the Sunamganj district town.

Local residents said that Jesmin along with her several classmates went to visit the Abduz Zahur Bridge over the River Surma in the town at about 11:00am after attending a model test at her school.

‘She suddenly jumped off the bridge and fell into the river,’ they said.

Sunamganj Sadar police station officer-in-charge Ikhtiar Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the incident and said that a diver team of the fire service recovered the body from the river after a two-hour search.

‘Primarily, the incident is being suspected as suicide,’ he said, adding that the body was sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
