Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Md Aminul Islam has said investigators have found a link between a "cultural figure" and the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi..

However, he did not disclose the name or identity of the person.

The Chief Prosecutor disclosed this information while responding to journalists' questions at a briefing at his office on Sunday.

He said some clues related to the Sagar-Runi murder emerged during an investigation into a crimes-against-humanity case.

He said the investigation into the murder case is being conducted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), not the tribunal's investigation agency.

"During investigations, we often come across clues relating to other incidents. In this case, we have found some clues related to the investigation into the Sagar-Runi murder. However, we cannot disclose any name or identity. All I can say is that a link has been found between the Sagar-Runi incident and a cultural figure," Aminul Islam said.

He said the information about the alleged link was found while reviewing call detail records (CDRs) related to the case.

The Chief Prosecutor said the information was being verified and that the cultural figure was currently under surveillance.

He said that if further reliable information emerges during the investigation, the tribunal could provide relevant information to the PBI officials investigating the Sagar-Runi murder.

Earlier, ICT prosecutor and Special Investigation Officer Tanvir Hasan Joha had said information about the Sagar-Runi murder emerged during an investigation into a case against former army officer Ziaul Ahsan.

Joha claimed that the intelligence wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had received information about the planned murder.

Quoting an intelligence officer, Joha said the officer had been told the night before the murder that "something is going to happen".

However, the officer was not told what was going to happen. The following morning, the officer learned about the murder of Sagar and Runi, Joha said.

Asked about the tribunal's jurisdiction in the Sagar-Runi murder case, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said the case would normally be tried by the relevant sessions court as it involved the murder of individuals.

"Since this is not a widespread or systematic offence but an individual murder case, it will be tried by the relevant sessions court," he said.

Meanwhile, the family of the slain journalists is set to file a formal complaint with the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday seeking an investigation into the murder.

Nowsher Roman, the plaintiff in the case, told reporters that he would submit the complaint to the tribunal on Monday.

He also urged the Chief Prosecutor to take steps to prevent anyone whose name has recently emerged in connection with the case from fleeing the country.

Asked whether the case could be tried by the tribunal, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said the family could submit an application.

"After receiving the application, it will be scrutinised and examined in accordance with the law. If the case falls within the jurisdiction of the tribunal, action will be taken according to the law," he said.
