Protest at JU over death of former student for alleged medical negligence

A group of students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University protested over the death of a former student Raahib Reza at Labaid Hospital, allegedly due to medical negligence at the hospital.

Some 50 protesters formed a human chain at around 2:30 pm at the university's Shaheed Minar premises.

Addressing the human chain, Tasmia Afroze, the spouse of deceased Raahib Reza and also a former student of JU Accounting and Information System Department, said, “My husband died due to LabAid's wrong treatment. An inquiry committee has been constituted over the incident. The committee should take information from Rahib's family members and friends instead of relying solely on Labaid's statement.”

“We want the investigation to be conducted neutrally in an effective manner. We also demand the revocation of the licenses of Labaid and Dr. Shwapnil’s license,” she added.

Nivin Reza, sister of deceased Raahib Reza, said, “Mahib was a patient of sleep apnea. Only licensed anesthetists can administer specific anesthesia. Conversely, any type of anesthesia was prohibited for him. But Dr. Shwapnil administered anesthesia on Raahib's body. The Labaid authorities and the accused doctor provided contradictory statements to us both before and after the incident."

Prof Salah Uddin Rajib of the Accounting and Information Systems Department said, “The reason behind Raahib’s death must be revealed. People usually go to private hospitals for better treatment. So, why should we accept anarchy in good hospitals? The culprits must have to be prosecuted otherwise this type of incident will be repeated.”

Protesters at the human chain demanded a fair investigation of the incident and exemplary punishment of Mamun-Al-Mahtab Shwapnil.

Raahib Reza, a 31-year-old information technology professional, died in Labaid Hospital in the capital’s Dhanmondi on February 19.

He was a former Accounting Information System Department of the university under the academic session 2012-13. Later, he joined as an IT consultant and product manager at Star Tech.
