
15th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad final held at DU

The final round of the ‘Bangladesh Mathematical Society-AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation 15th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad 2024’ was held on Friday at the AF Mujibur Rahman Mathematics Building of Dhaka University.
Organized by the Department of Applied Mathematics, the day-long event was inaugurated by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan as the chief guest.
Following the inauguration, a vibrant rally, led by the Vice-Chancellor, proceeded from the Mathematics Building across the campus.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Dr. Muhammad Ferdous, Chairman of the Department of Applied Mathematics. Special guests who spoke at the event included Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Sayema Haque Bidisha, President of Bangladesh Mathematical Society and Vice-Chancellor of Pirojpur University of Science and Technology Prof Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Prof Dr. Md. Shawkat Ali, Trustee of AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation M. Nurul Alam, and Convener of the 15th National Undergraduate Mathematics Olympiad Professor Dr. Md. Monirul Alam Sarker.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasized the importance of mathematics, stating, “Mathematics sharpens our thinking and reasoning abilities. It has its own unique language, and to master this language, continuous practice is essential. Knowledge of mathematics is invaluable in family, social, and professional life.” He further expressed optimism that the Olympiad fosters unity among students from across the country, adding, “Such events play a vital role in building solidarity among participants.”
The closing ceremony was graced by Dhaka University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed as the chief guest, who distributed prizes among the winners. Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dhaka University, spoke as a special guest.
It is mentioned that 83 undergraduate students from various educational institutions, who emerged victorious in regional rounds held across Dhaka’s two city corporations and six divisions, participated in the final round. The top 10 winners were: Fauzia Afia Islam and Md. Sabuj Rana Sohag from Dhaka University; Md. Jim Mim Siddique Saud, Anindya Biswas, Tahzib Hossain Khan, Md. Asharul Islam Fahim, and Fahim Muhtamim from BUET; Md. Golam Musabbir Joy from BRAC University; Ahnaf Marjuk from Islamic University of Technology; and Md. Sumon from Rajshahi University.
