Prime accused in Jhenaidah businessman Sultan murder arrested after 13 years
Taraque Mahamud Joy, Jhenaidah
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Chanchal Biswas, the primary accused in the 2013 murder of Jhenaidah-based businessman Khandaker Sultan Ahmed. He was apprehended on Wednesday night from Ashulia, Dhaka, where he had been operating a business under the alias "Suja Biswas".
According to Police Inspector Akhtar Hossain Mina of Jhenaidah CID, the murder stemmed from a financial dispute over a contracting project in Chuadanga. On June 29, 2013, Chanchal lured Sultan away over the phone. The following morning, police recovered Sultan's body—stuffed inside a sack—from an open field in Udaypur village.
The victim’s wife, Yasmin Sultana, subsequently filed a murder case naming Chanchal as the primary suspect. While police submitted a charge sheet in June 2015 against Chanchal and co-accused Jahangir Alam (who died in 2022), proceedings were stalled due to a high court stay order.
Following the lifting of the stay order last month, the CID assumed the investigation, tracked Chanchal using information technology, and made the arrest. Chanchal has been handed over to the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station as the investigation continues.
