Location of coal-laden submarine in Pasur River not identified
Ali Azim, Mongla (Bagerhat):
The location of the cargo ship carrying 1,250 metric tons of coal that sank after being hit by an oil tanker in the Pashur River in the Sundarbans has not been identified for two days.
On Wednesday, representatives of the Forest Department and the coal company's owners conducted separate inspections but were unable to locate the ship's exact location. As the exact location could not be identified, the rescue operation was not launched.
However, the Forest Department said that no visible signs of coal or oil spills were found at the scene. As the ship sank outside the main navigation channel, navigation is normal.
Earlier, on Monday (October 26), around 9 pm, the cargo ship MV Phulbari sank in an accident in the Sundari Kotha area of Pashur Channel. There were no casualties as the nine staff members on board swam to a nearby cargo ship.
Mongla Port Authority Deputy Director (Public Relations) Md. Salah Uddin Kabir said that the port's Harbor Department has written to the owner giving him 15 days to remove the sunken ship from the river. Legal action will be taken if the ship is not recovered within the stipulated time.
Meanwhile, the master of the cargo ship that was involved in the accident has filed a general diary (GD) with Mongla Police Station. Mongla Police Station OC Atiqur Rahman confirmed the GD record.
Ibrahim Bepari, a representative of cargo owner Messrs. Tania Shipping Lines, said preparations are underway to file a lawsuit against the company that owns the oil tanker that hit the ship.
