Press Council Chairman in Barishal : Journalists to be brought under accreditation law
Barishal Bureau
Efforts are underway to enact a Journalist Protection Act to safeguard and regulate media professionals, said Justice A.K.M. Abdus Hakim, Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council, during a training workshop in Barishal.
He emphasized that the primary duty of journalism is to report objective news independently and neutrally.
Speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled “Preventing Yellow Journalism and Ensuring Objective Reporting in Mass Media” held at Barishal Circuit House Auditorium on Sunday, Justice Hakim noted, “Transparency and accountability must be upheld in journalism. A journalist doesn’t necessarily need multiple academic degrees but must possess curiosity and a habit of continuous learning—even via platforms like Google.”
He added that efforts are being made not only to pass the Journalist Protection Act soon but also to bring journalists under a professional certification framework similar to that of lawyers.
The workshop was presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Obaidullah. The welcome address was delivered by Deputy Principal Information Officer of the Barishal Regional Information Office, Ms. Afroza Naise. Md. Abdus Sabur, Secretary (Deputy Secretary) of Bangladesh Press Council, attended as a resource person.
A total of 40 journalists from across Barishal participated in the training, and certificates were distributed at the end of the program.
