Ploughing with cows: A fading tradition in Bogura

Shibganj,( Bogura) Coresspondent

With the steady advance of modern agricultural machinery, the age-old tradition of ploughing fields with cows is fast disappearing across rural Bangladesh. Once a common sight during the cultivation season, this method is now rarely seen, as tractors and power tillers have largely replaced animal-driven ploughs.

However, in a rare glimpse of the past, a farmer in the Guzia crop field of Shibganj upazila, Bogura, was recently spotted ploughing his land using a pair of cows — a scene that evoked both nostalgia and concern for a vanishing heritage.

This image, captured by The Country Today correspondent Mizanur Rahman, serves as a poignant reminder of the deep-rooted agricultural traditions that have sustained rural livelihoods for generations. While more efficient technologies have transformed farming practices, they have also edged out many customs that once defined the rhythm of rural life.

As this practice fades into memory, some farmers and cultural advocates are calling for greater recognition of traditional farming techniques, not only as a part of our heritage but also as an environmentally friendly alternative for small-scale agriculture.
