RAJUK harrassing N’ganj building owners during eviction drive

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj

The Rajdani Unnyan Kartipakkha  (RAJUK) is conducting operations across Narayanganj district. So far, around 10 buildings have been demolished in Narayanganj city and Rupganj upazila. Several development companies and high-rise building owners in Narayanganj have raised allegations of misconduct regarding RAJUK’s operations. They claim that RAJUK officials are harassing various building owners and development companies in different ways. They create obstacles in the construction process in an attempt to gain benefits. If one does not comply with their unethical proposals, they are subjected to harassment. In Rupganj, RAJUK has conducted eviction operations on 8 under-construction buildings that were either unapproved or built without proper design clearance. A fine of 2 lakh taka was imposed and extended parts of the buildings were demolished. Building owners were warned. On Monday (April 21), the operation started around 11:30 am from Ruposhi area of Tarabo Municipality and continued until 4 pm under the leadership of RAJUK Executive Magistrate Mohammad Monir Hossain Hawlader. The operation was conducted under the management of RAJUK’s Narayanganj Zone-6/3. Authorized officers Jannatul Mawa, Surot Ali Rasel, and building inspector Md. Abdur Rahim along with a large police presence were present during the operation.

After the operation, Executive Magistrate Monir Hossain Hawlader said that constructing residential or commercial buildings without RAJUK's approval in areas under DAP (Detailed Area Plan) including all city corporations and municipalities is illegal. However, construction work is ongoing in almost all areas of Tarabo Municipality ignoring civic facilities. Due to these reasons, 6 residential buildings under construction, a hospital, and a factory building were penalized as a preliminary action. In case of repeated illegal construction in the future, the full extent of the law will be applied.Meanwhile, RAJUK has fined a construction company in Narayanganj one lakh taka for violating building laws and constructing without following the approved design. The building’s electricity connection was cut off, construction work was stopped, and unauthorized parts were demolished. On Sunday (April 20), this operation was conducted by RAJUK Executive Magistrate Tahmina Parvin in the Alam Khan Lane and Deobhog areas of the city. Executive Magistrate Tahmina Parvin stated that every under-construction building is required to have a RAJUK-approved design and information board in front of it, but this building did not follow the rule. No signboard was found at the site. Additionally, construction was being carried out on extended areas beyond the approved plan without leaving the required open space. Due to these irregularities, a fine of one lakh taka was imposed on the builder — Star View Complex — under Section 3 of the Building Construction Act, 1952, and legal measures were taken to remove the extended part. The operation, carried out with the assistance of law enforcement, included RAJUK authorized officers F. R. Ashik Ahmed, Md. Neyamul Zahid, and building inspector Md. Rajikul Islam, among others.
